Responsibilities

Brasfield & Gorrie, a recognized leader in the construction industry, has an exciting opportunity available for a Structural Engineer in Atlanta, Georgia to work internally with operations, preconstruction, project, and legal teams.

 

Responsibilities and Essential Duties include the following (other duties may be assigned):

  • Provide design engineering services for temporary structures consistent with the standard of care established within the construction and design engineering industry and applicable standards and laws. Temporary structures may include shoring towers, falsework, work bridges, shoring walls, cofferdams, bulkheads, hoisting brackets, crane foundations and tie-back connections, special rigging devices, temporary stability bracing, stay-in-place metal deck forms, and other structures and components necessary in the execution of building, heavy civil, industrial, and transportation projects.
  • Provide design engineering services for construction procedures consistent with the standard of care established within the construction and design engineering industry and applicable standards and laws. Construction procedures may include erection planning, demolition planning, geometry control, jacking sequences, slides and other structures movements, and other procedures necessary in the execution of building, heavy civil, industrial, and transportation projects.
  • Evaluate existing and proposed permanent structures for temporary loads and conditions. These may include pump trucks, cranes, and other equipment on structures, temporary attachments to permanent works, hoisting from permanent works, and similar conditions.
  • Generate appropriate plans, calculations, and other documentation consistent with Brasfield & Gorrie, industry, and licensing requirements, norms, and expectations. Work product may be for internal use or for submittal to clients when required and will typically be sealed in accordance with the licensing laws and requirements of the state where the project is being executed.
  • Perform quality control reviews of the plans, calculations, and other documentation prepared by other engineers employed by Brasfield & Gorrie or by external consultant engineers for the types of work described in the bullets above.
  • Support preconstruction teams by providing design engineering services, identifying and mitigating risks, vetting means and methods, brainstorming schemes, and developing value engineering concepts for the components of the projects related to the duties described in the bullets above. Develop engineering hours estimates for the engineering work that will be required if the pursuit is successful.
  • Support operations teams by continuing and finalizing all duties provided to support the preconstruction teams. Evaluate work that may be out of specification such as misplaced foundations and columns, distressed members, cracked concrete, misalignments, insufficient concrete breaks, and similar issues. Develop remediations for work performed by Brasfield and Gorrie. Review proposed remediations for work performed by subcontractors. Provide peer review of permanent structures and delegated designs.
  • Support design-build teams with design consultant management during design-build pursuits or other design engagements and with other duties typically performed for preconstruction and operations teams.
  • Support legal and operations teams by providing expertise as necessary for dispute or claim resolution.

Education - Skills - Knowledge - Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, or related field
  • 5+ years of engineering & design experience
  • Ability to obtain and maintain Professional Engineering Licensure within 6 months of hire
  • Preferred technical experience: reinforced concrete, post-tensioned concrete, structural steel and tubing, cold formed steel, timber, foundations, jacking systems, structure demolition, temporary falsework and shoring, stability of structures for temporary conditions, mobile and tower cranes, rigging and below the hook devices
  • Solid engineering judgment and reasoning
  • Ability to tactfully advocate professional opinion and elevate unresolved issues as needed
  • Excellent oral communication and interpersonal skills
